KUCHING: Except for some minor repairs, all venues for the upcoming 18th Sukma are completed, said Youth, Sports and Solidarity Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong in his winding up speech at the DUN yesterday.

He was providing an update on the national games to be hosted by Sarawak.

“As part of promotion for the games, Sukma Sarawak 2016 Baton Run commenced on March 13 in Lawas and ended in Kuching on April 23. A total of 8,000 runners participated in the run.

“The 100 days countdown for Sukma Sarawak 2016 was officially launched on April 10 at Kuching Sentral.

Sukma promotional visits to various states and Brunei Darussalam will be held this month. Other promotional activities such as billboards, banners and fishtails will be intensified in major cities and towns in Sarawak. Other forms of promotion will be through electronic and social media,” he said.

On the preparation of the state contingent, Manyin disclosed that 480 athletes consisting of 261 men and 219 women have been selected to represent Sarawak.

“Together with 68 officials, the athletes will report to the Centralised Training Camp scheduled from July 15 to 17 in Kuching.

“This camp will focus on strengthening the mental capacity as well as psychological aspect for the athletes before they report to the Games Village in Unimas on July 17.

“The chief minister is expected to address the contingent and hand over the state flag to the Chef de Mission of the contingent on July 16,” he added.

The official opening ceremony will be held on July 23 at Sarawak Stadium while the closing ceremony will be held on July 31.
