KOTA KINABALU: The North Borneo Wound Conference 2016 will be held at Magellan Sutera Harbour here from August 19 to 21 this year.

Founding president of the Malaysian Society of Wound Care Professionals, Dr Harikrishna K.R. Nair led the organizing committee to call on Minister of Special Tasks Datuk Teo Chee Kang here yesterday.

The purpose of the courtesy call was to invite Teo to the opening ceremony of the conference on August 19, as well as to seek financial support for the event.

Dr Harikrishna, who is also the chairman of the conference, said around 800 local and international participants from Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines and Australia would attend the conference to share and learn new wound management techniques, algorithm and advanced wound dressings.

He said wound care was an important issue, not only in Malaysia but the whole world.

Dr Harikrishna said wound care was mainly dealing with diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, vascular leg ulcers, fungating ulcers and surgical site infection. Among all these ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers and pressure ulcers contribute major problems to the country, he said.

Therefore, he said hosting this international event in Sabah was suitable as the local health care professionals would be able to learn new modern techniques of wound management that benefit the people in the State.

He added that the event also provided an opportunity for the delegates to visit Sabah, the Land Below the Wind.

Also present at the courtesy call were Queen Elizabeth Hospital Wound and Stoma Care Unit chief Dr Yap Jiann Wen and the organzing committee members.
