LIMBANG: Batu Danau assemblyman Paulus Palu Gumbang hopes that the state government would consider building a permanent venue that has lock-up shop units and trading lots in Kampung Medamit near here.

He said this in light of an incident on Saturday where a row of wooden shops in the village was razed down by fire around 1am.

“In the DUN (State Legislative Assembly) debate yesterday, I suggested that that state government to look into the possibility of having a more permanent solution — one that would not only address those affected by the  (recent) fire, but also those who are still trading in the area,” said the third-term state assemblyman.

He also proposed for agencies such as local councils or Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) to conduct a viability study building affordable lock-up shops, open either for rental or purchase.

“When this (study) is done, it would be easier to ensure the safety of the premises and also to provide basic amenities such as electricity and clean water supply,” he said.

Paulus also expressed his sympathy for the Kampung Medamit fire victims, adding that it was very fortunate that there were no casualties reported in the incident.

According to sources, the traders affected by the fire had been requested to move to the new township but this had failed to materialise.

Over 15 years ago, the local authority demolished the illegal structures there.

Nanga Medamit is a key point for the people along the Limbang River, in that it has a secondary school where longhouses folk upriver are sending their children to.
