Duo with RM360,000 syabu

TAWAU: Sabah Narcotics Crime Investigation Department and the Tawau police  arrested two men and seized 5,120.66 grams of syabu worth about RM360,000 at the Tawau Airport arrival hall about 7.15pm on June 16.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun said the first suspect, aged 36 and jobless was from Taman Golden Royal Villa, Miri, Sarawak while the second suspect aged 43, was a businessman from Kg Cina, Kunak.

The duo have no previous criminal records.

Rashid said both suspects would be investigated under Section 39B of  the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and were now remanded for seven days under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

Speaking to the media here yesterday morning, the police said the first suspect was behaving suspiciously when he arrived at the Tawau airport arrival hall from Kuala Lumpur by AirAsia.

Upon inspection, the police found three plastic bags containing syabu weighing about 3,074.12 grams inside a green bag wrapped in red gift paper with the words written ‘Happy Birthday’, and tied with a red ribbon.

Besides that, the police also seized another two plastic bags consisting of syabu weighing about 2,046.54 grams from a blue handled bag kept inside a brown box and wrapped in a white gift paper.

Following the incident, the police also detained another man at the Tawau airport arrival hall believed to be the first suspect’s friend.

The police also confiscated a Toyota Vigo car under Section 7 of  the Dangerous Drugs Act (Prevention of Misuse) 1988.

“We are still investigating this case to identify whether the syabu was smuggled in for the local market or for a neighbouring country,” Rashid added.
