KUCHING: Members of the public are urged to help Lim Liat Foh, an Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patient, by donating adult pampers and Enercal nutrient powder.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes the dysfunction of nerve cells (neurons) in the brain and spinal cord. Neurons are responsible for controlling voluntary muscles such as in the arms, legs and face. Over time this leads to muscle weakness gradually affecting body functions.

Hope Place, an NGO (non-governmental organisation), first heard of his plight from Break Through Church. The NGO was informed that Lim needed a new wheelchair and Enercal.

Hope Place founder Kelvin Wan and Hope Place manager Heidi Law later handed over the nutrient powder and new wheelchair to Lim.

Since last year Lim, 57, has been suffering from ALS which renders him unable to walk and speak.

His wife needs to take care of him 24 hours a day.

Before he was stricken, Lim and his wife were operating a porridge store. Now his wife is working as a cleaner with an income of RM30 per day. They have three children, the youngest 11 years old.

Hope Place is currently short of Enercal, which is a special nutrient powder for the disabled which is very expensive.

Wan called on the public to donate Enercal powder to Lim.

Hope Place is an NGO that visits the poor and less fortunate families to contribute food items like rice, cooking oil, sugar, salt, biscuits and noodles.

Many families or individuals barely earn enough to get through the month hence are grateful for basic necessities.

Hope Place also provides milk powder, oats and diapers to families caring for special needs children, or elderly/disabled persons.

Hope Place supports more than 150 families to whom they deliver aid once in two months.

For more information on how to help, Hope Place can be reached at 013-567 2775 from 8.30am to 12pm and 2pm to 5pm from Mondays to Fridays.

Alternatively, donations can be banked in directly to Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching at MayBank account no. 5112-8900-1160.
