KUALA LUMPUR: A father’s wish of giving birthday presents to his children was dashed when he was sentenced to one day’s jail and fined RM1,000 by a magistrates’ court here yesterday for stealing toys.

Magistrate Husna Dzulkifly handed the sentence to Tan Soon Hoh, 50, after he pleaded guilty to stealing nine toys including a Ninjago Masters of Spinjitzu set and six Hot Wheels cars, totaling RM170.70 at the Tesco Scott Garden, here at 8.30 pm on June 15.

The court also ordered the man, who was unemployed, to serve another month in jail if he failed to pay the fine. He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail sentence of up to 10 years or fine, and for a second or subsequent offence, of jail and fine or whipping, upon conviction.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nur Farah Adilah Noordin urged the court to impose a suitable sentence as a lesson to the accused.

Tan who was not represented appealed to the court for a light sentence as he had to support his wife and small children . — Bernama
