KUCHING: Customs Department is serious on curbing the influx of smuggled goods across the borders, especially firecrackers in view of the upcoming festival.

Its director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad said the operation would be intensified during the festive period through the Prohibited Goods Operations.

“The department has initiated the main operation since the past two months to curb smuggling activities such as firecrackers from entering the country.

“All is well with no major cases recorded but what matters most will be the prevention of any large entry of this prohibited item into the country.

“We have to ensure that people do not take things for granted by playing with this prohibited item (fireworks),” he told reporters at the sideline of breaking of fast with Customs officers at the Customs Housing Complex in Demak Laut Sunday.

Khazali refused to disclose the total seizure of firecrackers nationwide but only revealed they had made minor seizures.

He reminded the people of the danger of fireworks and its consequences and risks such as fire and loss of life or injury.

Earlier, Khazali presented contribution to 25 orphans from Laila Taib Welfare Complex and to Customs officers working at the border posts statewide.

He said the event was to show appreciation towards their staff and a chance for the orphans to feel the blessings of Ramadan and Hari Raya.
