KUCHING: UCSI University Sarawak Campus’ Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management students were given valuable insight into the food and beverage industry during a recent educational visit to Grand Margherita Hotel’s Rajang Lobby Lounge.

The 25 students had the opportunity to learn from Rajang Lobby Lounge manager Leo who shared his knowledge and skills in running a bar.

They were also treated to a simple demonstration of concocting one of the Rajang Lobby Lounge signature cocktails – the Margherita.

The trip was also to introduce the students to the university’s Wine and Bar Class, which aims to enhance their knowledge in bar operation and the basics of cocktail making.

In a statement, UCSI University lecturer Bernard Jussem said acquiring wine and bar knowledge was essential in order to be competent in the food and beverage department of a hotel and to produce beverages that are of international standard.

He added that the trip was a more holistic approach to education as it exposed students to the practical and physical nature of the industry to complement the theories they had learnt in class as well as gave students the opportunity to network.

“This educational trip has also served as a platform for the international students to be exposed to the local drinking culture. Overall, the students in charge of this trip were well-organised in terms of communication between the hotel and the university,” he said.

He extended his gratitude to the hotel particularly its Food and Beverage Department manager Alphonsus Lim as well as his students for their contribution and time spent in making this trip a success.

The university’s Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management offers three degree programmes namely BA (Hons) in Commerce, BA (Hons) in Event and Tourism Management, and BA (Hons) in Hospitality Management.

Diploma programmes are also available including Diploma in Hotel Management, Diploma in Culinary Arts and Diploma in Leisure Management.

For students who are interested to study Medicine and Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Architecture, Engineering, Social Sciences and Applied Science programmes, the university’s Centre for Pre-U Studies (CPU) offers options for Foundation Studies in both Arts and Science.
