MARUDI: The government is urged to build more infrastructure projects here, which is now still lacking, to benefit the local people.

Making the appeal was chairman of the local branch of Chinese Federation Association of Miri Division, Kapitan Jimmy Kiu Boon Fatt, in his welcoming speech at a dinner for the visiting Marudi assemblyman Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, who is also Assistant Minister for Local Government.

The dinner on Wednesday held at the civic centre also saw Penguang presenting appointment certificates to the newly elected members of the Marudi branch of Chinese Federation Association of Miri Division.

Kiu also urged the authority concerned to speed up the upgrading and building of Marudi-Miri road to a proper standard road.

It is understood that the RM77.4 million road would start building by middle of next month and would be completed in 30 months’ time.

Kiu also called on the government to upgrade Baram District into a division which has Long Lama, Beluru, Bario and Long Bedian under its wing, with Marudi the ‘capital’.

He also said the local Chinese community was fully behind Penguang and the state government.

“We do not suffer anymore in terms of administration. Certainly, there will be no more bias in the appointment of community leaders, especially from the Chinese community,” he said.

Meanwhiwle, more than 800 members attended the dinner which also saw the presence of Penguang’s wife Datin Monica Ukong, SAO Rebetta Janggi, council secretary Patrick Linggi Taboh, Baram Information officer Joseph James, Hii Teck Yun and Pemanca Chong Chin Hui.
