LABUAN: Maybank International Labuan Limited (MILL) has come up with a higher education sponsorship programme for its the 35 less-privileged students under its care.

Its chief executive officer, Khairuddin Abd Rahman, said MILL would be sponsoring at least three students who are eligible to enrol into local universities.

“Three academic high-achievers of the 35 students who have been identified to receive financial support and motivation to strive for excellence in their studies under the Maybank’s Cahaya Kasih employee volunteer programmes will receive the sponsorship programme,” he said at the breaking of fast of Maybank International Labuan with 35 less-privileged students and Special Olympic Federal Territory (SOFT) at Tiara Hotel here Thursday night.

The 35 less-privileged students from four schools namely, SMK Rancha-Rancha, St Anthony, SMK Sungai Bedaun and SMK Pantai are among those identified by the bank to receive ongoing support in its ‘Empower to Empower’ (E2E) programme which is a year-long initiative revolving around the theme of education for the underprivileged.

“Our E2E initiative is part of Maybank’s Cahaya Kasih programmes aimed at making positive and long-lasting effects on beneficiaries and communities where it operates,” Khairuddin said.

The 35 students and their families received household items including foodstuff, stationery, books, study tables and chairs as well as learning tools.

Another MILL initiative was the contribution of five haemodialysis machines, one ventilator and one incubator to Labuan Nucleus Hospital.

“We are handing over another three haemodialysis machines and a van worth a total of more than RM100,000 to the hospital in August, as the current machines are still insufficient to cater for the increasing number of kidney patients here. We have also provided cash support to children of Special Olympic Federal Territory under our care,” he said.

Earlier, the 35 students and eight children of Special Olympic Federal Territory were feted in the breaking of fast.

“The aim of the ‘iftar’ programme was to share the spirit of Ramadhan with the less-privileged students and the special children in line with Maybank’s mission in humanizing financing services,” he said.
