SIBU: Lawyers are told to go about their profession without fear or favour.
Giving this message was Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing when officiating at the opening of a new legal firm of Messrs Ling Sempurai Hii & Partners Advocates here yesterday.
‘They are there to go for justice and to ensure that citizens of this country have fair representation of justice,” he said of lawyers.
The three founding partners of the firm are Daren Ling, Sempurai Petrus and Jacqueline Hii.
Masing, who is also Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation, said lawyers should also do things in accordance with the laws of the land.
“Lawyers should interprete the laws properly,” he said.
Earlier, in his welcoming address, Sempurai said the legal firm was started five years ago by his partner Daren Ling under the name Daren Ling Advocates.
“All that he did then was to approach me to join him, but it was like courting a girl at first glance.
“We had our first branch at Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim in Kuching,” he recalled.
