Morshidi re-elected Azam chairman for fourth term

KUCHING: The chairman, deputy chairman, honorary secretary and honorary treasurer were all returned unopposed during the biennial election of office bearers of Angkatan Zaman Mansang’s (Azam) 33rd annual general meeting here last Friday.

State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani was re-elected as the chairman for the fourth term.

Datu Ismawi Ismuni was re-elected deputy chairman, Mohd Ariff Irwani Azahari (honorary secretary) and Soedirman Aini (honorary treasurer).

Seven other members were elected as board members – Dato Jameson Ahip Nawie, Sharkawi Yassin, Norjanah Razali, Dato William Wei, Dr Charles Leh, Adeline Liong and Dato’ Norhyati Ismail.

Four other nominees, Patrick Law, Ar Dominic Chuo, Alice Wee and Dr Peter Mulok Kedit were co-opted to the board.

In his opening remarks at the meeting Morshidi said the contributions of pioneer and loyal members were among factors that had enabled Azam to achieve laudable achievements such as Azam winning the 2nd Asean NGO Leadership Award for Rural Development and Poverty Eradication in 2015.

He also said Azam’s increased engagement with the youths helped to keep the younger generations well informed of the state’s development efforts.

In his acceptance speech, the re-elected chairman said with the current changes and adjustments in the state’s priorities and approaches in the development of Sarawak, Azam would have important roles to play to complement the development programmes and activities.

These include rural development and rural youth engagement and development.

The chairman also called upon Azam members to utilise their experience, knowledge and skills to help enhance and strengthen Azam’s programmes and activities for the betterment of the people of Sarawak.

Azam has more than 100 active members comprising government officers, professionals from various backgrounds, members of the private and corporate sectors, media practitioners, professional retirees and youths.

Established in 1983, Azam is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting development communication in Sarawak in order to help facilitate development efforts in the state.
