KUCHING: Integrated Design Consultant (IDC) is inviting creative people throughout the state to join in the merriment of their second edition of PechaKucha Night Kuching 2016 to be held at The Granary Kitchen + Bar on July 1.

According to its senior architect Tina Lau Kor Ting, the decision for another edition of the programme was due to encouraging response received from members of the public at its first edition in April.

“We were very excited with the turnout during our first PechaKucha that attracted more than 200 members of the public who have given us positive feedbacks.

“This is possibly because they look at PechaKucha as the perfect platform for people to show and share their work in a relaxed way, especially for newbies, in which we hope to uncover unexpected talents and ideas,” she said during the run-through session with speakers and members of the organising committee held at their office near Jalan Chan Chin Ann here Friday.

Lau pointed out that the event was an informal and fun gathering where creative people get together and share their ideas, works, thoughts, holiday snaps, just about anything in the PechaKucha 20×20 format.

“PechaKucha 20×20 is a simple presentation where you show 20 images, each for 20 seconds. The images advance automatically as you talk along to the images.

“The format follows the art of concise presentations,” she said, adding that each presenter would be given 6 minutes and 40 seconds for their presentations.

Lau mentioned that the PechaKucha Night also aims to bring creative, passionate people together to network, meet and show their work in public.

“It is a great way for the most inexperienced speaker to talk about their work in public for the first time.

“We hope to unveil some hidden talents and quirks from Kuching and to ultimately show something that is significantly unique and can only be found in Sarawak. People can present about things that they love, which is a key to a great PechaKucha Night,” she said.

For this second edition of PechaKucha Night, 12 persons have confirmed their participation. They are freelance creative artist Bethany Lau, self taught paper and quilling enthusiast Ma Xiangru, photographer Chonfan Bong, storyboard artist Vanessa Lau, graphic designer John Huang, architects Min Wee, Azie Morni and Ng Chee Wee, abstract artist David Chew, Capoiera trainer Malcolm Wu, writer Jonathan Soon, and filmmaker Samuel Wong.

She also pointed out that PechaKucha Night was strictly for content and not profit, and any charges to the public would be used to cover the cost of running the event.

“To help support the network, we are also charging a small fee to contribute to the PechaKucha Global Fund.

“We are looking at more than 200 attendees at our next PechaKucha Night,” she added.

Tickets are priced at RM15 (includes entrance and a free-flow non-alcoholic drink) with presentations to begin at 8.20pm.

To obtain the tickets, contact The Granary Kitchen + Bar at 0112-5089321 or email [email protected].

During the run-through session, there was also a rehearsal session for speakers to practise their presentations in front of members of the organising committee.

Lau added that IDC was also planning to organise PechaKucha 4 times per year.

“We are also in the midst of recruiting creative teenagers, below the age of 18, to be part of our next Pecha Kucha after the July 1 session and further details will be announced at a later date.

“I see very few opportunities for young people to express their arts and ideas, especially those who have just started and such platform will help us to raise a generation of youngsters who are interested in arts and want to show to the world their creative ideas, which for us means starting at a young age for the ideas to develop tremendously,” she added.
