SIBU: The Royal Malaysia Police’s Amanita (Peace Lady unit) are not afraid to use the personal touch to rally women to be their eyes and ears to fight crime.

“We are going door-to-door, where women folk especially housewives, are our target group. We want to gather information on crime as sometimes there is information not reported (to the police) but (an offence) occurred; for example, domestic violence and minors involved in drug abuse among others,” ASP Dayang Tantysera Abang Ibrahim told thesundaypost yesterday when met during a visit to Kampung Pa’Dris here as part of a ‘Jalinan Kasih Ramadan’ programme.

“The reason this information goes unreported is because they want to preserve good relation with their neighbours,” she explained, adding the visits were also meant to educate women on how to protect themselves from falling victim to crime.

The programme was jointly organised by SK Abang Ali Alumni Association (Paskaa) and SK Abang Ali’s Parent-Teacher-Association in collaboration with Amanita. Among those present were Paskaa deputy chairman Mohamad Safree Mohamad and SK Abang Ali headmaster Mahmud Ahad. The group visited some 20 houses of needy pupils in Kampung Datu and Kampung Hilir.

Dayang said the information gathered would later be channelled to the relevant units such as drug offences to the narcotics division and property crime to the crime division.

She gave her assurance that the identities of women who provided information to them would be kept secret.

She disclosed that Amanita had visited many residential areas here and that the personal approach had been quite effective thus far.

She added that they also gave briefings whenever they were invited to events to increase public awareness on Amanita.
