BINTULU: A total of RM 25.29 billion has been invested in 16 projects by local and foreign investors in Samalaju Industrial Park since its establishment in 2008.

Its newly minted assemblyman Majang Renggi said that these projects would create jobs and revealed that the next biggest development would be at the 2,000-acre New Township called Samalaju Eco Park which will maintain the beauty of its flora and fauna.

“The new township is about 60 kilometres from Bintulu Town and 150 kilometres from Miri Town,”he told BATVI at the site here yesterday.

“It will be an administrative centre for the population that could spring up to 30,000 people by 2020,” he added.

The new township will have a police station, hospital, fire department and both primary and secondary schools.

“In fact, there is a plan to convert the area into a full fledged district at the largest single industrial zone in the country,” he enthused.

Majang said the new township would bring a new lease of development in the area and would help to transform the rural area into an urban and industrial site in this northern region of Sarawak.

He revealed that the whole area would be a reality in about ten years from 2020 while the shops at the commercial site are ready for sale.

Majang also revealed the Samalaju Port would be further enhanced with the development of a naval base nearby.

Meanwhile, Majang said that an Integrated Waste Management System was being developed for the secure management of wastes generated at Samalaju Industrial Park (SIP).

“Through the system, it will allow the conversion of industrial wastes into useful industrial material that can be used as construction material for road-making instead of dumping it as hazardous waste,” he said.

He added that industry players and experts in waste management, cement, construction and property development sectors and speakers from Germany, United Kingdom, France, Norway, Japan, South Korea, China and Malaysia attended a forum on the subject recently at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

Samalaju is one of the five nodes for SCORE after Tanjung Manis, Baram,Tunoh and Mukah.

Located on the west coast of Sarawak, SCORE stretches from Tanjung Manis at the mouth of the Rajang River in the south to Samalaju in the north via Mukah and Bintulu.
