MARUDI: Moh Ling Siang an Upper 6 student of SMK Marudi makes this town proud because he will represent the country at the International Physics Olympiad in Zurich, Switzerland from July 11 to 17.

He is among 400 participants from 80 countries selected to take part in the event. Selection is based on four subjects – Physics, Chemistry , Math and Biology — which they must excel in and their overall PT3, SPM and STPM examination results.

Assistant Minister for Local Government Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil yesterday afternoon presented him with a RM3,000 personal donation.

Penguang is also a former student of SMK Marudi from 1967 to 1971. He said everybody here was proud of Ling Siang’s achievement “because of our rural background and our parents are poor”.

Ling Siang, 17, has been selected through a series of workshops organised by the Ministry of Education and University Kebangsaan Malaysia. He survived the rigours of each series to be where he is now.

Meanwhile, his Physics teacher John Liew Keng Hong, who was also at the function, prayed that Moh would be able to achieve success in the competition to make Marudi and the state proud.

MK Marudi senior assistant Nurlaila Abdullah, other teachers and Ling Siang’s parents were also present at the presentation ceremony held at Penguang’s service centre here.
