MIRI: Over 1.5 million visitors crossed Sungai Tujuh Immigration Checkpoint from Jan 1 to June 24 this year.
Of this number, 853,659 people used the checkpoint to enter Miri while 718,515 people used it to get to Brunei.
Miri Immigration Department chief Roy G. Fender said the volume normally spiked during festive seasons, such as the forthcoming Hari Raya celebration.
“We have opened more counters to ensure there are no long queues during this period,” he told The Borneo Post after handing over ‘Iftar’ to motorists yesterday on behalf of Teacher Training Institute Miri and Immigration Miri at the checkpoint.
He said there were now seven counters opened, including two on the bus lanes.
“We took this proactive measure because previously queues could reach one kilometre long,” he said, adding that the opening hours were still from 6am to midnight daily.
