KUCHING: The police have ruled out political and racial motive in the murder of NCR activist Bill Kayong.

State CID chief SAC Dev Kumar said they are currently focusing on three possible motives – the NCR land conflict in Bekelit, Bekenu, Miri and conflicts in the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) Bill was involved with as well as his personal matters.

“So far there is no further additional information regarding the case but I hope members of the public will be patient and let the police do their job.

“We have interviewed some friends, his ‘enemies’ as well as individuals who heard the sounds of the shooting at the scene but no arrest has been made so far.”

He disclosed this to reporters at the breaking of fast event with Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and state police at Tabuan Jaya police housing complex on Monday.

Dev Kumar also said shooting cases would take time to be solved but assured that the police will bring the perpetrator(s) to justice.

“I hope members of the public will put their trust in the police to solve this case.”

Responding to a question, he said there was no CCTV camera near the traffic light where the incident happened and the nearest buildings were quite a distance from the scene.

At the same time, he urged members of the public not to share images of individuals not related to the case on social media as this could interfere with police investigation.

A few photos which were claimed to be of the suspect in the shooting case had gone viral on social media especially in Facebook.

Bill Kayong was killed in a drive-by shooting in Miri by an unknown assailant on June 21.
