SIBU: Three men have been arrested here for their alleged involvement in a scam that offers lucrative offshore jobs in Labuan.

According to police spokesman, the arrest came following police reports lodged by at least 28 individuals from here, Selangau, Bintangor, Bintulu and even Kuching, who claimed that the three collected between RM150 and RM300 from each of the individuals as part of the total RM1,500 processing fee.

“Acting on this information, Sibu police arrested the three men on Monday afternoon.

“For now, they are under a three-day remand,” the spokesman said.

It is learnt that 10 victims from Kuching lodged their reports at Sibu Central police station last week after they were left stranded here.

“They told us that they were on their way to Labuan via Bintulu for the offshore jobs which according to them, offered salaries of up to RM4,000 and even more.

“We have learnt that all 10 (victims) are relatives and every one of them has paid the conmen — also their relatives — RM150.”

The spokesman said the victims told police that they were supposed to have been briefed on their jobs before leaving for Labuan.

“They were supposed to meet a man named Christopher in Sibu, but he never appeared.

“It was then that they knew they had been conned.
