SIBU: Seventy-five summonses were issued to lorries and commercial vehicles in a three-day special operation mounted by Road Transport Department (RTD) stretching from Bintulu to Kuching.

It state assistant director (enforcement) Albert Clement led the operation, which started June 26 and ended yesterday.

“Fifty-three of the summonses were issued to lorry drivers for having load protruding from their vehicles.

“The rest of the summonses were for various non-compliances with the road safety requirements,” Albert said yesterday.

He said they were also looking out for dangerous loading.

Meanwhile, he advised road users to take extra precaution in view of the expected increase in traffic in the run-up to Hari Raya celebration.

“Motorists are to ensure that their vehicles are in tip-top condition before making the long journey.

“Be patient and abide by road rules and regulations and don’t speed.

“Plan your trip well and ensure enough sleep before making the long journey.”

Albert said the public could forward their complaints by calling Sarawak JPJ’s hotline on 082-628725.

Earlier, he warned bus drivers to keep to safe speed limit at all times or risk having their driving licence suspended after accumulating certain points under the demerit point system.

Bus drivers were not allowed to drive beyond 70km/h, he added.
