KUCHING: A carpenter is in coma following a road accident while on his way home to his village to celebrate Hari Raya yesterday morning.

The 31-year-old, who works at Jalan Batu Lintang here, was the pillion rider of a motorcycle when the mishap occurred around 7am in Asajaya.

His friend, the rider, said their motorcycle went out of control upon reaching a bridge and struck the structure’s railing.

“We left the city around 5am to go to Kampung Maludam when the accident happened in Asajaya. The collision flung the two of us and our motorcycle about 20 feet to the bottom of the bridge,” said the friend, who emerged from the accident unscathed.

The carpenter, who has just started his two-week leave from work to celebrate Hari Raya, suffered serious head injuries and is in a coma.

He was subsequently sent to the Sarawak General Hospital here and admitted for further treatment.

In an unrelated incident, a youth died while his younger brother suffered minor injuries following a road accident at Jalan Astana here yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Mohd Zamri Mostapha of Kampung Tanjung in Petra Jaya.

The fatality took place around 8.30am when the two siblings were travelling towards Jalan Matang on a motorcycle with Mohd Zamri as the pillion rider.

Their machine was said to have collided into the rear of a car, which caused the elder brother to be flung into the opposite lane of the road where he was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Medical personnel rushed the critically-injured Mohd Zamri to the Sarawak General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 9.45am.
