KLANG: Port Klang marine police seized 1,267 cartons of contraband cigarettes of various brands worth RM232,474 from a boat in the coastal areas of Sungai Langat near here, early yesterday morning.
Marine police Region 1 commander, ACP Marzuki Che Shuib said in the 3 am operation, a team patrolling the area came across a suspicious-looking boat.
“As the team approached the boat, the skipper suddenly sped off towards the mangrove forests before abandoning the boat.
“Upon inspection, we found 1,267 cartons of cigarettes in the boat,” he told a press conference here yesterday.
Marzuki said among cigarette brands seized were Marlboro, Kingston and Luffman.
“We believe that apart from cigarettes, the area is also used by smugglers to bring in other contraband items such as firecrackers for the festive season this year,” he added. — Bernama
