MIRI: Motorists, hikers and joggers are calling on Miri City Council (MCC) to install guardrails along the steep road to Canada Hill, which houses the iconic Oil Well No.1 and a petroleum museum at the top.

Regular hiker Yong Kim Chai claimed to have come across many accidents along that road.

“It is high time for MCC to do something about that road as many joggers, hikers, tourists visit Canada Hill and Oil Well No.1.”

He cautioned that the road was a relatively steep climb, and there were a number of ravines along the way; hence, precautionary measures were pertinent.

Villagers living in the area, he added, had also voiced their concern because the road is especially dangerous when it rains and during the night. They hoped for guardrails, too.

The road is actually is linked to Pujut Tanjung Batu, Miri Hospital, Kampung Haji Wahed and Kampung Katong.

It is a shortcut of sorts to the city.

Businessman and regular jogger Stanley Jacob concurred there should be guardrails because the road is winding at certain stretches.

“Do something as many joggers, hikers and tourists visit Canada Hill daily, especially in the evening to breathe the fresh air and to soak in the aerial view of the city, South China Sea and the forest below.”

Stanley believed if the road safety aspect was taken care of, more people would visit the city to sample what Canada Hill had to offer.
