KOTA KINABALU: The speed limit at all federal roads in Sabah has been reduced by 10 Km/h, in conjunction with Ops Selamat IX.

Road Safety Department (RSD) Sabah director Herdianshah Abdul Karim said the maximum speed limit at all federal roads had been reduced from 90 Km/p to 80 Km/h during Ops Selamat IX that began on June 29 until July 13.

Beginning June 29, the maximum speed limit on federal roads is 80 Km/h.

Previously, the maximum speed limit was at 90 Km/h but for this year’s Ops Selamat IX, the maximum speed limit has been reduced to 80 Km/h because based on previous research, the number one factor that contributed to road accidents was speeding.

So by reducing the speed limit on federal roads, we hope it will prevent road accidents, especially to those who will be heading back to their villages or home towns for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, he said after launching the road safety campaign at Taman Awam at Teluk Likas here, yesterday.

The campaign is a collaboration with the Road Transport Department, the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), the State Fire and Rescue Services Department, Puspakom, Ministry of Transport, and Sabah Skill and Technology Centre (SSTC).

Meanwhile, Herdianshah said human errors accounted for about 80.6 per cent of road accidents while 13.2 per cent were due to the environment.

From the study, only 6.2 percent of road accidents were caused by vehicle malfunction, he said.

To ensure safe journey during the holiday season, Herdianshah reminded road users, and especially those behind the wheel to check their vehicles before starting their long journeys.

Always heed the speed limit on signboards along certain roads. For federal roads, do not exceed the speed limit.

I know that everyone is excited to ‘balik kampong’ but be patient while on the road and abide by the traffic laws, he said.
