KUCHING: The Ministry of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing is prepared to work with organisations like Global Women’s Place Network (GWPN) Malaysia to promote peace through various programmes.

Its minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said this was because women could play the role and had the influence to contribute towards peace.

“We welcome such effort by the organisation (GWPN) Malaysia to promore peace and we will like to see the programmes they organise allow us to work together to promote peace because women have the influence,” she said at a press conference yesterday.

Fatimah told reporters this after receiving a courtesy visit from International Senior Advisors, GWNP Malaysia, headed by Dr Yoo Chang Young, and members of Sarawak Women and Family Council (SWFC) at her office at Bangunan Baitulmakmur.

She pointed out that GWNP had organised 12 peace promotion programnmes across the country including twice in Kuching, once each in Bintulu and Miri. Such progrrammes are the priority of the organisation.

Besides that, GWNP had also appointed two young ambassadors to attend seminars or conventions and other programmes to enable them to desseminate such information to their peers.

According to her, the ministry through SWFC was making effort to promote peace.

On the visit, Fatimah said it was to convey their congratulations to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem and Barisan Nasional (BN) for the resounding victory in the May 7 state election. She had been tasked by Adenan to welcome the delegation.

Present were GWPN Malaysia committee members and political secretaries to the chief minister, Suzanne Lee and Kijan Toynbee, and Department of Family and Women director Noriah Ahmad and SWFC members.
