KUCHING: Two foreign workers were beaten up by a group of three men for unknown reasons, other than a cheap shot at small-time extortion early yesterday morning.

The victims from Bangladesh and Indonesia work at a coffee shop in MJC Batu Kawa.

While waiting for his employer to turn up and settle the RM100 medical fee at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) here yesterday, the Bangladeshi, 30, said he had been employed in the city for a couple of years.

According to him, he usually chose to hang out at the coffee shop after the stall he manned closed around 4am. While he was idling, three unidentified men approached him for a toast out of the blue.

When the victim made clear that hard drinks was not his cuppa, the trio made an outright demand for a few hundred ringgit. Just as the victim told them he was penniless, the group launched an assault on him. The victim was with another Indonesian worker at the time.

Fortunately, the Bangladeshi managed to make a run from the scene and requested for help from the residents nearby. They were then sent to the hospital for treatment.
