PUTRAJAYA: The health ministry is considering all aspects in providing free vaccination, especially for immigrants and refugees in the country.
Minister, Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam said the ministry was discussing with various stakeholders, including the finance and home ministries, as the foreigners were among causes of the spread of deadly diseases in Malaysia.
“We are still discussing various matters on the vaccination. So far, we have not come to any decision as the matter must be reviewed comprehensively to ensure the welfare of all parties.
“The decision will only be announced after a holistic discussion by the Health Ministry Technical Committee which will set the direction on its implementation. Only after gaining a consensus, can we make a decision,” he said.
Dr Subramaniam was speaking to reporters here yesterday, after presenting cheques and donations totalling RM700,000 to 48 non-governmental organisations, including representatives of temples and students studying abroad.
On another development, Dr Subramaniam, who is also MIC president said he would hold talks with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to find a solution to the financial problems faced by Indian students studying abroad.
“Recently, MIC met quite a large number of Indian students from low and middle-income families who are facing financial difficulties due to the depreciation of the Ringgit.
“Even though they have estimated the cost of their studies and other needs, they still do not have enough. MIC has assisted them through the Maju Institute of Education Development but we have our limitations,” he added. — Bernama
