SEMPORNA: Umno Vice President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has announced that he is quitting Umno with immediate effect.

Shafie, who is also Semporna member of parliament, said the decision was made following the Umno Supreme Council’s decision to suspend him before making any investigation on disciplinary matters.

He said the Supreme Council should at least make an investigation before taking any action and give him the opportunity to defend himself.

“I attended the Supreme Council meeting but none of them talked about this issue where I could have given an explanation; instead they made the decision while I was not there,” he said.

Shafie, who was suspended by the Umno Supreme Council while in Mecca, announced this during a press conference in front of thousands of supporters in conjunction with the ‘Program Rakyat Bersama Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal’, yesterday. The Umno Supreme Council sacked party deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir last month while Shafie was suspended.

Following his suspension, Semporna Umno division deputy head Datuk Dr Jaujan Sambakong announced that he was quitting Umno along with Semporna Umno Youth chief and Semporna Wanita Umno chief as well as 300 Umno branch leaders.

Shafie said his resignation from the party would not stop him from continuing to fight for and assist the people. He also denied rumours that he would be joining Usno or establishing a new party. He said he had not thought about the matter as he had no idea that he would be suspended.

He stressed that claims of him joining Usno was just slander as he stood by Umno’s principles and struggle while still holding a position in the party.

Shafie also hoped that Umno will make its decisions on members transparently without favoritism and take stern action against other members who made mistakes.
