KUCHING: Two foreign drug dealers were shot dead after attacking police during a raid of a wooden shed used to package and distribute Syabu at an oil palm plantation in Bintulu on Tuesday night.

State CID chief SAC Dev Kumar said the 11.30pm-raid, which was personally led by Bintulu District police chief Supt Zailanni Amit, took place at Jalan Sebauh-Pandan after police received reliable information regarding the illegal activity.

“Upon reaching the shed, the police party heard commotion inside and shouted to identify themselves while directing those inside to open the front door.

“As there was no response from the occupants, the police party cordoned off the shed with Zailanni personally directing his men to storm the structure by breaking the front door.

“Two suspects were immediately spotted inside the shed, with one of them holding a keris and attempting to stab the first policeman.

“Faced with a life-threatening situation, the policeman defended himself by firing three shots at the suspect, who immediately fell to the ground,” said Dev Kumar in a statement to the press.

The second suspect, who was armed with a machete, ran out of the shed through the back door upon seeing his accomplice being shot.

However, he encountered a lone policeman guarding the back of the shed and swung his weapon at the former but missed.

“The quick-thinking policeman, who had his firearm drawn, avoided death or serious bodily harm by firing three shots at the suspect, who fell to the ground,” said Dev Kumar.

He added that a tactical search was then made on the suspects, who were confirmed dead from gunshot wounds to the body, while the keris and machete found next to the bodies were seized.

A search of the shed, meanwhile, uncovered various items related to the distribution of methamphetamine, including a weighing machine, packaged syabu, plastic packaging and other drug utensils.

“The identity of the two suspects cannot be ascertained at this moment as no identification documents were found on them or in the shed. We have reasons to believe they may be foreigners but their nationalities are not known based on their appearance. We will check their fingerprints to see if they have previous convictions,” said Dev Kumar, adding the two suspects were also believed to be heavily under the influence of drugs when they attacked the policemen.

He congratulated the Bintulu police chief and his team for their justified actions in firing the shots at the two armed drug dealers who attacked them, as failure to do so would have resulted in serious bodily harm or even death.
