SRI AMAN: The festive celebrations of various races in this country showcase the 1Malaysia spirit envisioned by prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Lingga assemblywoman Simoi Peri said festivities celebrated in Sarawak, Sabah or Peninsula Malaysia were  participated by the multiracial community.

“It has become part of our culture especially in Sarawak where we visit one another, our friends, our colleagues and our neighbours irrespective of status, position or religion. This demonstrates the spirit of 1Malaysia,” she said.

Simoi was met when she visited the Hari Raya open house of Pemanca Mas Shamsiah Maslem at Kampung Hilir near here yesterday.

She said the tradition of visiting was a unique culture that must be preserved for a harmonious and united community.

“Unity in this multifaith state is important for us to progress. We have lived under one roof in peace and harmony through accepting and respecting one another’s culture, religion, faith and traditions, unlike other countries where it has been ruined by racial clashes,” she said.

“The Barisan Nasional (BN) government is fair in its policies and development planning. All races and the minorities are given opportunities. The unity we experienced today did not came about suddenly but due to the sacrifices and contributions of past political icons, leaders and the community that worked hard and uphold strong principals for unity.” Simoi said.

“As such, we will appreciate that all government departments, agencies and non-governmental organisations can come together to pool the human resources and skills to create activities that promote and strengthen unity.”
