SIBU: The Malaysian Armed Forces Veteran Association Sarawak (PVTMS) and Ex-Royal Malaysian Navy Association of Malaysia (PBTLDM) Sarawak branch express their support for the appointment of a Bumiputera as deputy chairman of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).

The associations comprise 95 per cent Bumiputera membership.

PVTMS president Thomas Ling Kui Eng said a Bumiputera deputy chairman would understand the wishes of the Bumiputera community and would give the necessary help especially in the area of entrepreneurship to help the Bumiputera communitry, including army veterans, to improve their standard of living.

“I thus hope the SMC deputy chairman post is given to a Bumiputera,” he told a press conference at their office here yesterday.

Ling, who is also president of PBTLDM Sarawak branch, also urged the SMC and Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) to consider taking one of their members as a councillor or Kapitan so that he or she could better serve the commmunity regardless of his or her political affliation.

He also said they had submitted a letter to SMC on March 2013 asking the council to rename Jalan Pahlawan,  Jalan Temenggong Datuk as Kanang Langkau in honour of his service to defend the sovereignty and security of the country during his service with the armed forces.

In the past, he said this area of Sibu (Jalan Pahlawan) came under Rejang Area Security Command (Rascom) which was set up to fight the communist insurgency then.
