KUALA LUMPUR: Iran is to place a narcotics officer at its embassy here to step up cooperation to catch drug traffickers from that country.

This was agreed upon at a meeting between Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar and Iranian Anti-Narcotics deputy head, Gen M Mirzae at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman here yesterday.

Mirzae and his delegation will meet Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director, Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff and his officers tomorrow to iron out details of the cooperation between the two countries, including exchange of information.

Mokhtar told reporters that collaboration between them which started in 2010, had been effective in reducing the number of traffickers entering the country.

“The number of Iranian traffickers decreased from 42 traffickers in 2014 to 27 in 2015. We have arrested three traffickers so far this year,” he said.

Mokhtar added that 30 Iranian students had been detained thus far, for drug-related offences.

He stressed that Malaysian police would not tolerate corruption among their officers, and would act sternly against anyone found to be involved in drug-related offences.

“We are working closely with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (to detect anyone involved in such offences)…You are supposed to fight against drug offenders, not work with them,” he said. — Bernama
