KUCHING: The state government has received 25 buses from RapidKL for use during the upcoming Sukma 2016.

The buses were handed over to State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohd Morshidi Abdul Ghani by RapidKL chief operating officer Mohd Azam Omar at a ceremony that took place at the Pending Port yesterday.

The handover was witnessed by Youth, Sports and Solidarity Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong.

According to Morshidi, the state needed a total of 100 buses for the national sporting event, which will run from July 22 to July 31.

“RapidKL provides us with 25 buses. The remaining will be provided by local bus companies. These buses will be used to transport around 8,000 athletes and officials to various venues. After Sukma, the buses will continue to be used for the National Paralympics Games, which will be held in early August,” he said.

Morshidi informed that the buses come with drivers, or bus captains as they are called, from Kuala Lumpur.

“These drivers will be provided with local guides so that they will know the directions to different venues.

“We thank RapidKL and Konsortium Logistik Berhad (KLB) for their sponsorship of the buses,” he said.

Earlier in his speech, Mohd Azam explained that the 25 buses which arrived at Pending Port on July 3 were the latest in their fleet.

“These buses are equipped with disabled-friendly features, which make them suitable for use in the Paralympics.

“There are a total of 30 bus captains, and they will be assisted by support staff from Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

RapidKL provides bus services in Kuala Lumpur city centre. There are also similar Rapid bus services in Georgetown, Penang, Kuantan, Pahang, and Kemunting, Perak.

Also present were Youth and Sports Assistant Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Kuching Port Authority chairman Dato Awang Bemee Pengiran Ali Basah and others.
