KUCHING: The untimely death of Sarawak Sukma athlete Mohd Syafiq Halias has brought sadness to state sports officials with less than two weeks to the 18th Sukma.

Sarawak Sports Corporation CEO Dr Ong Kong Swee described the accident as a tragedy.

“The late athlete had a great future in the sport boat sailing and he was in our back-up squad for boat sailing team. We are also concerned with the (other) athlete who survived Muhammad Syafig Hasnan who is injured and in shock,” Dr Ong told The Borneo Post yesterday.

The National Sport Council are sending sports psychologists to assist the athlete and also the state sailing team as soon as possible, he added.

There is hope that Syafig Hasnan, a medal prospect, could recover in time to take part in the Games.

“We also hoped the tragedy do not hit the boat sailing team as our team are prepared to gave the other states the challenge in the event,“ he lamented.

Dr Ong also revealed that the Sarawak Sports Council (MSNS) had sent their condolences to the family of the late Mohd Syafiq Halias and made a donation of RM3,000 to ease the family’s burden.
