LAWAS: Police here caught a couple trying to smuggle an assortment of fake firearms and ammunitions worth RM7,000 through the immigration border post of Mengkalap Trusan on Wednesday night.

District police chief, DSP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, said a police team sprang into action afer being informed of the incident by an immigration officer at 10.30pm.

A male suspect, 34, from Terengganu and a woman suspect, 36, from Sabah were included in the ‘doubt list’ of the immigration control system. They were using a white Honda vehicle when they were stopped for inspection.

“Upon checking, police found several fake firearms, ammunitions and related items hidden in the vehicle.

“They were Pump Gun Airsoft, Rifle Sniper Airsoft, Rifle Airsoft, Pistol Airsoft (Glock brand), Pistol Airsoft (Desert Eagle brand), five bottles of Cannister Gas, two boxes of Gamo Gas and two packets of Airsoft Plastic bullets,” Abang Zainal said yesterday.

He said the items were confiscated and the two suspects detained for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 36 (1) of Firearms Act, 1960.

Abang Zainalsaid initial investigations revealed that the couple wanted to smuggle the items from Lawas to Sabah. They allegedly purchased the fake firearms and ammunitions through Facebook from a dealer based in Indonesia.
