MIRI: A businessman with a ‘Dato’ title is among three suspects in the murder of social activist and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) member Bill Kayong, who are still at large.

The businessman is believed to be the mastermind behind the shooting of Bill at a traffic light intersection near E-mart in Permyjaya here on June 21.

“Police are looking for him and two other suspects still at large,” state CID chief SAC Dev Kumar said when met by reporters outside the court room after eight suspects of the murder were produced in the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday.

Two of the suspects were charged for the murder of the activist, while four others were released here but re-arrested under Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA) yesterday.

Two other suspects, a man and a woman, were released unconditionally by the same court.

Mohamad Fitri Pauzi, 29, was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code with murder by shooting of Bill at a traffic light intersection near E-Mart in Permyjaya at 8.20am on June 21.

The other suspect, Lie Chang Loon, 29, was charged with abetment — an offence punishable under Section 109 read together with Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Lie was charged together with one Lee CK and two others still at large for abetting Mohamad Fitri in the commission of the murder of the activist.

No pleas were recorded from both the accused, who appeared calm when the court interpreter read out the charges to them in Malay and Mandarin, respectively.

Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles fixed Aug 30 for case mention.

The other four suspects who were re-arrested after their release upon the expiry of their remand were detained under Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA).

Both Mohamad Fitri and Lie were ordered to be detained in Lambir Prison until the mention of their case in the same court.

Senior Federal Counsel Muhamad Iskandar Ahmad assisted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Poh Yih Tian appeared for the prosecution, while Ranbir Singh was the defence counsel for both accused.

Abun Sui Anyie is holding brief for Bill’s family.

Meanwhile, Ranbir requested for Mohamad Fitri to be sent for check-up and treatment at a clinic or hospital for rashes on his right wrist caused by handcuffs.
