KUCHING: The Samarahan Bike Fest organised by Tegar Bikers Motor Club is expected to showcase 1,500 motorbikes ranging from scooters, mopeds, cruiser and superbikes from Sept 23 to 25.

Themed ‘Riding for Freedom and Knowledge’, the festival aims to foster ties between bikers from all over Borneo and the community at large.

“We aim to bring in 40 clubs from all over Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei and even Peninsular Malaysia and judging from the initial response, we are confident that more than 60,000 visitors will throng the festival site,” said organising chairman Afiq Fikri Ibrahim Afiq.

He said this at the soft launch of the Samarahan Bike Fest at The Banquet Restaurant here yesterday by Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“The site for this year Samarahan Bike Fest would be Aiman Mall, Kota Samarahan and various activities would be held to inject excitement to the event,” Afiq said.

Among the events were sales booth and exhibition, charity convoy, slow riding competition, ‘Bermukun’ contest, daredevil stunts, bike wash, and drift demonstrations.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim in his speech lauded the effort of organising such a festival as it could be the bridge to connect bikers from Borneo and beyond.

“Apart from that, it can also become a tool to promote Samarahan Division and boost the economy.

“However, I would like to advise my fellow bikers to prioritise safety when riding. We often heard about crashes and it saddens me to see a rider down,” he said.

Abdul Karim later announced a grant worth RM15,000 for the organiser of the festival and urged them to request for more funds from his ministry.

The event yesterday also saw the presentation of invitation mementos to 36 representatives of motorbike clubs and also the introduction of Samarahan Bike Fest Beauty Queen contest.
