Malay/Melanau pavilion set to enthral visitors

SIBU: The Malay/Melanau Pavilion at Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) 2016 is set to mesmerise the crowds by showcasing the communities’ rich culture and tradition from July 21 till 27 at Sibu Town Square Phase 1.

The Pavilion working committee chairman Ibrahim Laili told reporters yesterday that a host of programmes had been lined up to excite visitors.

“The Malay/Melanau Pavilion this year differs slightly from that of last year as there would be more emphasis on traditional performances. There would also be a ‘Silat’ demonstration besides live band performance. BCF Star Idol to unearth new singing talent would be held on the closing night of the pavilion on July 27,” Ibrahim said,

adding that the stage performance starts from 8pm till 11pm nightly.

He pointed out that Assistant Minister for Science Research and Biotechnology Dr Annuar Rapaee would grace the opening of the Malay/Melanau Pavilion on July 22, while Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is also Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, is expected to officiate at the closing on July 27.

Adding on, Ibrahim revealed that the procession for BCF 2016 would be on July 21 at 6.30pm involving all the pavilions namely: Chinese, Dayak, Malay/Melanau and Youth.

Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh is expected to lead the procession.

Going into details of the programme, Ibrahim said Malay Union Club (MUC) and ‘Melayu-Melanau Bersatu’ (MMB) would man the stage on July 21.

He said the topics for that night’s performance are ‘Melestari Tradisi Melayu’ and Malay traditional wedding.

On July 22 the performance is on ‘Wacana Kegemilangan Bangsa Melayu Melanau’.

Sibu Melanau Association would stage ‘Globalisasi Melanau Dalam The Melody of Melanau’ on July 23, added Ibrahim.

He said Sarawak Federation of Women’s Institute (PPWS) would showcase ‘Memelihara Kebudayaan Melayu while and ‘Angkatan anak Sarawak’ (Awas) would roll out ‘Pentomin’, ‘Silat’ and buskers on July 24.

Then on July 25, ‘Kebajikan Melanau Kampung Nangka’

would present the life journey of Kampung Nangka Melanau. ‘Persatuan Masyarakat Melayu Sibu’ would dwell on ‘Memertabatkan Adat Istiadat Melayu’.

On July 26, ‘Gabungan Angkatan Penggiat Seni Budaya Sibu (Gappesa) would showcase ‘Melakari Muzik Dalam Lagu’.

The open singing competition by Sarawak Malay/Melanau Music Industry has been slotted for the closing night on July 27.

On BCF Star Idol, Ibrahim said this is to unearth singing talent among Malay/Melanau community and various races in the country.

Among those present were working committee vice-chairperson Zaiton Abdul Kader and secretary Mohd Safree Mohd.
