KUCHING: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang views swimming as an important survival skill.

“There are many drowning cases and urban folks unlike rural folks need to see the need for all to have swimming skill in the event of emergency,” he explained.

Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman, also described swimmming as part of sports culture that requires discipline for students to excel.

“The constant training builds up one’s character and also team spirit and it’s vital to community and nation building. Not only is competition encouraging, it is a requisite to progress in a free market society. We need to familiarize ourselves at a very young age on the element of competition so that we learn, improve and strife in order to achive improvement and success,” he noted when officiating the Power Aquatic Swimming Club (PASC) First Inter-Primary School Swimming Competition at the Aquatics Centre Petra Jaya here yesterday.

He was accompanied by PASC president Tan Kun Gee, organisers and sponsors.

One hundred and ninety-six swimmers from 20 schools took part in the meet.

Lo also took the opportunity to rally support for the 18th Sukma which starts next week. Swimming and diving events will take place at the new aquatics centre from July 23-27.

“Do give support to Team Sarawak!,” he cheered.
