KUCHING: Sarawak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) presented education incentives worth RM10,640 to 74 outstanding students from Chinese schools recently.

The recipients comprised 44 primary and 30 secondary school students from various Chinese independent schools as well as aided Chinese schools in Kuching.

The chamber’s human resource development committee chairman Tay Yu Siang congratulated the students for their hard work in achieving good academic results in order to receive the incentives.

“Students are selected not because their parents are members of this chamber but because of the efforts you put into your studies to obtain excellent results,” he said at the presentation ceremony held at Wisma Chambers here.

He also urged the students to aim higher as many international universities were currently visiting schools here to scout for students with excellent academic and co-curriculum performance.

“Students who have been selected and given offer to pursue higher education in these international universities stand to receive scholarships, including living allowance,” Tay said.

He also hoped that students pursuing tertiary education overseas would return home after graduation to give back to society.

Meanwhile, the chamber is planning ways to assist skilled workers in obtaining recognised certificates as part of their professional development.

Tay said: “We are still in the initial study. We will reveal the plan once it has been finalised.

“This plan will also benefit the non-Chinese students and workers. So, we hope the people can pay serious attention to technical and vocational education.”

With skills and proficiency in Mandarin, Tay believed that skilled workers would be absorbed into the workforce.

Vice presidents Temenggong Lu Kim Yong and Dato Sri Chai Ten Boon as well as secretary-general Chai Voon Tok were also present at the function.
