KUCHING: Car owners are required to apply for the new Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC) which was introduced on June 1.

According to the state Road Transport Department (JPJ) public relations officer Rogie Saui, the new VOC is an online-based system to replace hard-copy registration cards or ‘green cards’.

With information and details of cars and car owners stored online, he said car owners with VOC would no longer be required to produce any documents to carry out transactions such as renewal of road tax or change of ownership as opposed to the present practice of producing the green cards.

“It is basically an improvement or step-up of the old green card where the VOC provides better security features. And it is small and convenient to carry, as compared to the green cards that we have been using,” Rogie told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He said since June 1, the VOC had been issued to owners of new vehicles or those applying for transfer of ownership instead of the green cards, which were actually pink in colour.

“VOC has been introduced since June 1 and we are now in the grace period. It will finally be implemented to replace the old system of green cards or the old car registration cards.

“The whole process will be free of charge. Car owners only need to fill in forms and wait for the documents to be processed. The process would be like any other process in applying for government documents.”

He said car owners can go to JPJ to apply for VOC.

Meanwhile, car owners can still go to any post office to renew their road tax. “Car owners can still renew their road tax at the post office like before. However, for them to apply for VOC, they can only do it in JPJ.”

He said, as of Sept 1, new certificates would be issued to owners of vehicles who renewed their road tax and made changes to their particulars.
