SANDAKAN: The Road Transport Department (RTD) Sandakan and its Mile 32 Enforcement Station have become the first RTD office in Sabah to be awarded litter-free office by the Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC).

The award was officially handed by SMC president Datuk James Wong to RTD Sandakan branch head Romie Matalip in a ceremony held at the RTD office yesterday.

According to Romie, the idea for RTD Sandakan to get litter-free certification started from last year when the director of RTD Sabah introduced the Public Sector Conducive Ecosystem (EKSA).

“We had a hard time changing from 5S concept to EKSA, but we were finally certified with Amalan EKSA (Excellent Category) in November last year.

“The certification comes with responsibility to maintain and enhance our work place to a more conducive place to work in; we aimed to be litter-free offices under SMC,” he said.

RTD Sandakan has then carried out various environmental programmes including gotong-royong, cleanliness campaigns, implementation of one trash bin for one counter, and more.

The SMC president expressed hope that more government agencies and the private sector would follow RTD’s step and support SMC’s programmes to create a cleaner city.

Also present were RTD Sabah assistant director Patrick Lai Ngau and head of Mile 32 RTD Enforcement Station, Shamsalsinar Jalaluddin as well as representatives of SMC and RTD Sandakan personnel.
