KUCHING: Twenty-seven people aged between 14 and 59 were picked up in CID raids on illegal gambling conducted throughout the state last week (July 11-17).

These suspects were allegedly engaged in promoting public lottery without a licence, said state Crime Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Dev Kumar.

“Eighteen of those arrested are male while nine are female. Cash amounting to RM7,230 was seized during the 20 raids conducted by CID headquarters and 14 districts,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

While CID headquarters along with Sibu and Padawan districts conducted two raids each, Miri was the only district that registered one more raid than they did, pointed out SAC Dev.

He said the rest of the districts with one raid each were Kuching, Bintulu, Betong, Sarikei, Saratok, Limbang, Bau, Simunjan, Kota Samarahan, Meradong and Serian. “Various exhibits relating to illegal character lottery such as portable printers, mobile phones, calculators, betting ledgers and slips were seized during the raids.”

He added that all district police chiefs (OCPD) had been directed by the Commissioner of Police Datuk Mazlan Mansor to intensify efforts to eradicate illegal gambling in the state.
