KUALA LUMPUR: Three youths including a father of two were yesterday sentenced to jail and fined RM5,000 each after pleading guilty to riding their motorcycles in a reckless and dangerous manner.

Magistrate Noorul Fhaiez Mohd Nayan sentenced the 23-year-old father of two, R Supramaniam; information technology technician Haris Subhan, 22; and technician Muhammad Nasriq Abdullah, 22, to three days in jail and a fine of RM5,000 in default a three-month jail.

Supramaniam, who works as a mechanic, committed the offence in a reckless and dangerous manner by performing the wheelie act, which posed danger to himself and other road users, in Jalan Raja Laut here, at 5.30pm yesterday.

Haris Subhan committed a similar offence at a traffic light intersection in Jalan Parlimen here, at 9.15pm on July 10, while Muhammad Nasriq Abdullah performed the same act in Jalan Sultan Ismail here, between 10.15pm and 10.20pm the same day.

They were charged under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which provides a maximum five-year jail and fine up to RM15,000, as well as revocation of the offender’s driving licence, upon conviction.

Earlier, the trio appealed for a minimum fine as they are the sole breadwinner of their families.

However, traffic prosecution officer Insp Hashimah Hashim urged for a deterrant sentence.

According to the facts of the case, the trio were detained by the police during road safety operations which were conducted separately at the locations. — Bernama
