KUCHING: Sarawak women’s hockey team has suffered two consecutive losses in the preliminary round of the Sukma XVIII competition.

Held at Hockey Stadium, Petra Jaya, Sarawak lost to Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (WPKL) 5-2 after losing to Terengganu 2-1 yesterday (July 20) in the Group A matches.

WPKL had a good start in the game with Qasidah Najwa Muhammad Halmi scoring the first goal at the sixth minute.

Qasidah scored another goal at the 32nd minute when Sarawak goalkeeper Siti Mardiana Ahmad was not able to save the penalty stroke after a foul against one of the WPKL team players.

Sarawak’s Suhaila Sata scored the first goal for her team at the 34th minute but less than a minute later Arinah Azyyati Iskandar Miza scored the third goal for WPKL.

The host team led an unrelenting attack against WPKL, scoring its second but final goal of the day at the 38th minute.

WPKL then continued to thrash Sarawak with the last two goals at the 57th and 66th minutes both scored by Nur Zafirah Aziz.

The cloudy weather did not dampen Sarawak supporters cheers for the team throughout the game.

The Group A matches will continue tomorrow with Sarawak against Kedah and Federal Territory against Pahang.
