Woman jailed, fined for cheating

KOTA KINABALU: The Magistrate’s Court here yesterday sentenced a woman to three years’ jail and RM3,000 fine, in default, six months’ jail for cheating.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie imposed the sentence on Farieza D’ Souza Mohd Firdaus, 32, after she pleaded guilty to a charge framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code which is punishable by a maximum jail of 10 years and whipping and also liable to a fine upon conviction.

The accused, who was represented by counsel Azhier Farhan Arisin, admitted to cheating a man by saying that she could manage the purchase of a house under Projek Perumahan Rakyat in Meruntum and induced the victim to give her RM1,400 at a coffee shop at Beverly Hills in Penampang on June 30, 2015.

In an unrelated case, 19-year-old Mohd Izzat Jupri will know his fate on August 10 this year for molesting a woman.

The court put off the sentencing of the accused at the request of his counsel Azhier Farhan to get a social report for the accused provided by the Welfare Department.

The accused admitted to touching the woman’s left breast at a hotel here at 4pm on July 11.

The offence was under Section 354 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail of 10 years and whipping or with a fine, upon conviction.
