KAPIT: The only single-lane access road to Kapit Hospital ends at the mortuary and if there is a real emergency like a fire an ambulance would not be able to come out of the hospital compound with ease.

Yesterday, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing saw for himself the ‘dead-end’ road and wanted something done to correct it.

“The road is not only narrow but it is also very congested.

“Kapit Hospital director Dr Hii King Ching told me that a road can be widened or rebuilt because there is ample space,” he said during a visit to the hospital where he was shown around the premises by Dr Hii.

Together with him were Kapit Resident Joseph Belayong, Kapit and Bukit Mabong district officers Elvis Didit and Douglas Pungga respectively, divisional engineer Gerald George, assistant officer of Land and Survey Department Watson Awan and its assistant planning officer Daniel Taboh, police chief DSP Freddy Bian and Councilor Jantai Maseng.

Masing, who is also Minister of Infrastructure Development and Transportation, said the road could be built at a cost of RM2 million to ease the traffic flow.

“It’s small money but we have to think of the safety and convenience of the hospital users. I’ll get the funding from my ministry,” he said.

The hospital was built in the 1950s by the Methodist Mission.
