SIBU: Sarawak women’s volleyball team convincingly beat Terengganu 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-16) in a lop-sided match held at Sibu Volleyball Association Indoor Stadium at Rejang Park yesterday afternoon.

Earlier, Sarawak had also swept aside Selangor 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 23-21) to top Group A after two matches.

Head coach Dato Moh Wung Ming, however, said the two victories were nothing to shout about as they were more or less expected.

“It was just the beginning and the show had just started. Our girls will not be complacent and will continue to work aggressively to ensure that they will top the group,” he added.

Moh said the players cannot underestimate the strength of any team as “complacency kills.”

Sarawak will take on Penang in their remaining Group A match on July 24 at 4pm.

“Penang is not really a strong team as we had beaten them previously in our few friendly matches.

“But then we will not take anything for granted.”

Sarawak are red-hot favourites for the Sukma women’s volleyball title, having been champions for the past 10 times out of 12 editions of Sukma.

Spikers Angela Tan, Alicia Yii and Mandy Chiu are in top form and have been the inspirational force for the state team.

Meanwhile, over at Group B, Johore suffered a rude shock when it was defeated by Pahang 1-3 (14-25,18-25,25-21-25,20- 25)

Strongly tipped as title contender, Johore had earlier beaten Perak 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-16, 25-22).

Also in Group B are the Federal Territory.
