KUCHING: Sarawak shooters are aiming for at least three gold medals in the 18th Sukma shooting events to be held from July 25-29.

Assistant chef-de-mission Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that the state shooters are determined to deliver now that they have the new Sarawak Shooting Range at the Sarawak Stadium Complex.

“Our shooters have familiarised themselves with the new facility for the past one week and we are confident that they will be able to deliver medals especially gold to the state contingent,” he told reporters during his visit to the range to observe the shooting squad yesterday.

Abdul Rahman who is also the Assistant Minister for Public Utilities (Electronics and Telecommunication) singled out Pahang as the main rival for medals.

Meanwhile, he pointed that the facility will be managed by the association as part of its future plan. The matter will be discussed further between Shooting Association of Sarawak (SAS) and the government through the State Secretary’s office as well as the relevant ministry and agencies.

“It is hoped that the facility will be fully utilised in the near future not only among shooting enthusiasts but also the public.

“Now that the facility has been completed, I’m sure from now onwards Sarawak can produce better shooters and it starts from all of you, you are the one who we are pinning our hopes on.

“This is because even without a proper range for practice purpose in the past we are still able to produce shooters who can aim for gold,” he told the shooters.

“I think that in future, Sarawak has the potential to be the powerhouse in shooting sports,” he added.
