SIBU: Sarawakians are proud of this day (Sarawak Day) as it reminds them of the date when Sarawak gained self-rule from British colony as a prelude to forming Malaysia together with North Borneo (Sabah), Singapore and Malaya in 1963.

According to Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee, as Sarawakians, we should treasure the racial and religious harmony we enjoy today.

He was speaking before flagging off the more than 200 big bikers from in and around Sibu taking part in the ‘Sarawak Day Big Bike Ride to Sarikei’ at Sibu Town Square Phase 2 yesterday morning.

The event was organsied by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).

“We are blessed if we compare the harmonious environment we have here with many regions in the world that are facing social unrest due to racial and religious tension,” he added.
